Greetings all!
I completed Deus Ex! it was good. lots of small glitches and problems but overall enjoyable.
the story lost me towards the end as i slowly started to not care about the situation... there ended up being a few agendas and i really didn't mind which one i aligned myself to. Saw all 4 endings and am satisfied.
I went on to complete Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet last night. Great little game. lots of fun, smooth controls, lovely presentation. yes. I approve :)
Next up.. i think i might finish off bastion or maybe Alice... not sure yet...
watch this space!

Deus update....
Morning all.
Well I managed to fix my little situation with the weapons cache. Loading a certain save and then forcing a re-zone load twice seemed to do it. Since the. It hasn't done any more misbehaving...
But I have noticed something.
Save - down a guard - take pocket secretary - read - get combination - works
Down a guard - save - take pocket secretary - read - get combination - die then load - pocket secretary vanishes
Down a guard - take pocket secretary - save - read - get combination - die then load - combination lost, but pocket secretary still kept, no way to add combination, just remember it.
Strange that.
Still, am loving the game again, played a lot of it last night and I think am nearing the end. Interesting twists and stuff but two big observations
1. Press X to accept/press A to accept... Very inconsistent
2. Inventory system does not support a twisting storyline as you drop items to make room for what you think you will need, then things change and you have no way or re equipping except loading a 30 min old save.
Despite the moans, good stuff.

It was all going so well....
...and now I am on a mission I cannot finish. I started a side quest, did half of it. Completed a full game mission, came back to finish the side quest and an item I need to interact with is no longer active. The net won't tell me anything. People are having issues with this quest in a completely different way tho, so my searches are yielding no results. Help?
It's called cloak and daggers and I cannot interact with the weapons cache.

Moral Impact...
I am playing through Deus Ex and i have finished the first mission. I killed a bunch of people and wont he day!
when i got back to base, a couple of people gave me some hassle for all the killing i did. I was like "wow... what is THEIR problem?!"
then i had a mission in a police station. "Police are the good guys" i am thinking. so i don't kill anyone, i sneak around and manage to do the mission without anyone finding me or anyone dying.
then i talk to this guy who was part of the baddies in the first mission. he goes "Hey man, you killed all my friends..." and suddenly i felt really bad. I felt like because i thought they were baddies, it was "Ok" to kill them. but tell me its the police, and all of a sudden its wrong. even tho, in both cases i could have probably got through it all without killing. anyways, it made me stop and think for a while.
Enjoying the game.

Load time vs retry attempts....
Playing deus ex....
Noticed the loading times are quite long.
This wouldn't be a problem but in a game which needs you to succeed through trial and error... You die quite a lot. Meaning you need to load quite a lot. This is frustrating for the player.
Installing the game to my hdd to see if it improves the time whilst I make some cheese on toast.
Mmmmmmm
EDIT: No... it didn't help the loading times at all. still, at least it saves the disk drive in my 360 from spinning up every load and my cheese on toast was awesome.
Gaming update.. the state of play
Where I been at!?!?
Well...
Looking at the list I thought I better do a recap.
I had two weeks off and played a few games in that time. Some were from the list, others were new and exciting.
In my two weeks I played and completed “From Dust” and Battlefield Bad Company 2.
From Dust
Great fun, nice little idea, very atmospheric and great rounded game.
BAD CAMERA CONTROLS. There are two positions, UP and DOWN but the controls feel analogue.. meaning you are always flitting between the two without realising.
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Aauh maan.... Ok. It was a great game. Lots of fun, feels polished, a few bugs but thats ok it was a great experience.
But WHERE did the humour go? I remember being in fits of laughter at the comedy in bad company... but this game has gone all... Serious and ... I dunno. Feels like its lost some individuality.
There were some great moments of humour but they were in between fights and left me thinking “I wish there was more”.
And one big question... WARNING SPOILERS! –
At the end of Bad Company 1... they stole tonnes of gold... why are they still in the army and not rich and retired?
So looking at my list...I have so far completed the following –
Hitman Blood Money – 360
Assassins Creed – 360
Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3
Bad Company 2 – 360
DR2 Case Zero – 360
From Dust – 360
Currently I am part way through..
Insanely twisted shadow planet
Bastion
Deus Ex human revolution
Alice
Shadows of the damned
I WILL Finish at least 3 of these before moving on to a new game J

Done. Finally. Take that metroid prime!
Completed! Go videogames!
Watching credits roll now. Overall I give the game 7 out of ten. It's polished and fun and I get to explore lots. It gets minus points for frustrating radial select on wii for both visors and weapons and when you have to swap between them to defeat a lot of the later enemies the game really starts to fall over. The a game cube controls were a lot better for this game.
Re entrant gameplay can be great... But prime stretches it a little too far to be fun for me. Others may disagree
17 hours play, 74% of items
In closing, I enjoyed it far more before the last few parts of the game. So overall, it's great, but lost me near the end.
Time for a cup of tea I think.
Thanks to "Claire" for her awesome help and for making me push through the frustration and anger. Without her, I think I would be at least one wii controller down :)
Defeated Ridley....
Now we are fighting metroid prime. Now..........
I really hate manual saves and having to go through half a level just to get to where you were.
The last part of this game I am not finding fun at all. It's just a grind.
More news as it happens
Grrrr

Up at 9:30 an 'troiding!
Bam! Got the ice beam, a couple of energy tanks, numerous missile expansions and are currently on our way to the gravity chamber ...
Feeling like a productive day so far :)
1am and calling it a night... Or a morning...
Cutting through metroid at speed today! Claire and I have got probably about 60% through the game today with only breaks for food shopping, cups of tea and eating. Had a break for a couple of episodes of futurama and dinner and then settled down to an evening of prime.
I am enjoying the game a lot but it does feel really old school in places. I love exploring and finding stuff but hate having to go from one end of the game world to the other in order to find an item I need. It feels like artificial game lengthening. I feel like it is acceptable for a 2d style metroid game but it feels out of place in a 3d game.
My biggest gripe tho... No autosave. I wouldn't mind having to manually save if the rooms were a sensible distance from the boss fights. I did not like having to trudge across a level from a save room having just failed a boss. Most annoying.
Also... Hints... I can be wondering around for about 10 minutes and then the game will say
"aaah!!! You need to go here!". Why can't I ask for a hint or just be shown the hint at the end of a section? I wouldn't even mind scanning for hints. At least that would be interactive.
Still, it feels metroid, plays like metroid and is great fun. I am enjoying it and I am going to try hard to complete it tomorrow :)
Going to sleep now.
Night all

Time... What a stange companion you are
Hello!
Well it has been a while hasn't it. I have been struggling to play video games from the list recently because I have had so much going on with work, personal life and wedding plans. This weekend I have a friend staying with me. For the purposes of this blog we will call her "Claire". Now this "Claire" person is a huge metroid fan and I have been talking with her about it for many years. So today, I have continued my metroid game and we are committed to seeing it through! She is staying with me till tuesday so I fancy our chances of completing it :)
Will keep updating as we go. Currently 1hour and 50 mins into the story. We got missiles, morph ball and are on our way to a place with high wasp activity...
Hot seating ftw!

Metal Gear Solid 4... Mission complete!
So after a couple of busy weeks, travelling and helping my sister move i finally got a chance to complete MGS4!
it just finished. just now. finally. after.. .a lot of cut scenes.
Now i understood fully before i played the game that there were a lot of cutscenes in the game and i knew some of them were very long. What i didn't realise was the percentage of the game that was cutscenes. I don't think i would have minded if i got to play the game a bit more but i felt like i had to watch a lot of things i would have rather played. In fact, this morning when i picked up the controller, i got to run down one corridor filled with little round.. arm..o..bots... for 5 minutes and then watch a cutscene that lasted... maybe... 45? then i got to have a fight with a guy.. hand to hand... which lasted 10 minutes.. and then... over an hour and a half of credits and cutscenes. so actually... i played the game for 15 minutes and sat waiting for it to finish. Niky walked in on me playing and said "you know, every time i see this game it is a cutscene, i have never actually seen you play it". Kinda sums up my point.
My conclusions are as follows.
1. I wish the game let me play more OR had less cutscenes and more action OR was longer so i could play more.
2. what i did get to play was great fun and i wish it had been longer
3. Act 2 and 4 were awesome. I loved them.
4. Act 1,3 and 5 i didn't enjoy so much. I wish the majority of the game had been more 2 and 4.
In closing. I did enjoy MGS4 and i can see it has great bits but, i have to say "it's not really for me".
Now if i look at my list... my next game is... METROID PRIME!
I will be playing the Wii version as i have the trilogy disk with all 3 Metroid games on. although i do have shadows of the damned and Alice ready to play.. might have a quick go on each of them next week.
3 games done! go me!

ACT3... impressions...also.. SPOILERS!
i spent nearly an hour sneaking around a few streets, assassinating guards and following a guy... and then it all kicked off with a long cutscene... Snake met... big momma... and then ran away on a bike with her... and shot at flying stuff.
cool boss fight followed with flying boss. dealt with that and then... a cut scene... that was about.... an hour long? and then a briefing that was... 35 mins long?.. and counting...
big momma died, ocelot/liquid went crazy, snake looks a bit like Khan from Star Trek 2, I think Raiden finally died but on the plus side, i think Sunny learned to cook eggs good.
also, it looks like we are going to shadow moses island! (actually happy about that! :D )
I wanted to go to bed about an hour ago but the cutscene just wouldn't end!
Hi ho... hi ho... we're off to shadow Mo!(ses island...)

something clicked!
Last night something cool happened. The game let me play it without a cut scene or long conversation for about an hour and it was really good fun. I feel like a broke a barrier and found "the game". I also watched an OTT cut scene where Raiden slices up a bunch of lady-legged-cow-noise mechs and then fights "Vamp". It was so over the top i laughed but in a "shoot-em up"/"Wanted" type of way.
There was some good combat, a nice vehicle turret section, a cool octo-boss lady level with a nice mechanic and all in all, i found "ACT 2" in south america really good fun!
Going to start Act 3 tonight. maybe even get to 4! :O
In closing, its getting better.

MGS4.. thoughts and concerns
I am playing Metal Gear Solid 4. According to my save file i am...5 hours in... but actually, its longer... but i will come back to that.
more and more recently i feel like i am "missing" something in a few videogames. A good friend of mine Chuck has told me time and time again how awesome No More Heroes is. I know several others like Catherine and Oli who share the same opinion. I played it. But... Just didn't get it. I did not have fun playing the game and struggled to see how others could find enjoyment in it. I have been feeling the same about MGS4. Which incidentally, the previously mentioned friends also enjoyed.
they have all had attempts at convincing or at least explaining it to me. I have heard things like "its more about the atmosphere" and "it wraps up the story completely" or "its a bit artsy" but i cannot shake the fact that it feels like a bad design and not fun. This kinda makes me feel like a classical musician hearing rock and roll and saying "this isn't real music". I don't want to dismiss it so i am struggling to find the "wow" factor in this game and understand it myself.
What follows are some thoughts i jotted down (hopefully no spoilers) as i played MGS4.
"war has changed".. it has? oh ok... so what i am i meant to be doing?...
WAR HAS CHANGED.. yes... so... uhm.. where do i go?
"Snake.. .this is a sneaking mission!"... really? SNEAKING? i am a combat veteran with years of experience and you are explaining to me that this is a "Sneaking mission".. not stealth... not espionage.. not even covert. No. Sneaking mission... :/ translation? In Joke? who knows.
Why does snake always repeat the last word each person says as a question? is he forgetful or crazy?
SNAKE - "Crazy?!"
Yes snake! its when people lose their grip on reality...
there is a girl cooking eggs. What?...
22 minutes later and i dont know what i am doing still
And now... i am meeting a monkey... wearing pants... and a guy.... called.... drebin.... and.... all.... of ..... the cutscenes... have................. really...
...long... pauses....... between each word..........- CUE SNAKE - "Each word?!"
OH I SEEE!!!! i am using LAST GENERATION NANOMACHINES!!! *slaps forehead* OF COURSE!... no.... wait... i still have no idea what is going on.
the guy with diarrhea... is in a special forces group.. and is a ten year combat vet!...rookie... with the safety on... :/
I meet Meryl! the colonels daughter! and she is leading...The UN's RAT TEAM! - *everyone poses*...
I am sure all military units strike a hero pose when they announce themselves
An elite unit of crazy ass beast robots are dispatched to kill the immediate threat of.... 6 guys and a bulldozer... :/ really?...(reeeeeeleeeeeeeeeeee?)
that was the end of my first play session. I had enough. it got too crazy. So i thought i would pick it up another day.
that day was yesterday. and it was not a good experience.
I learned as i tried to load my game that it needs you to SAVE MANUALLY!
thats right.
the only save i had... was JUST after the intro. :(
this DID however teach me something amusing. When skipping ALL the cutscenes and running through the levels without due care and attention, i covered about 3 hours of the game in 15 mins.
Having caught up to where i was i SAVED. then i thought, hey, lets get on with it!
I played for 10 more minutes before... the game told me it was installing and to wait a few minutes.
Mid game installs. really? REALLY MGS4?!?
In short, this is a struggle. I am not enjoying it. but will complete it out of spite.
Feel free to explain to me why its a great game as i really want to like it. It just hates me.

Dear Assassins Creed...
Dear Assassin's Creed,
This letter was going to be very different. I was going to ask what i had done to offend you, why you had forsaken me, and why you had stabbed me in the back over a matter of 40G. But, you came through. You re-spawned the buggy Templar that was stopping me from getting a full 1000G and we can now be friends.
I have decided to write a few things that made me laugh about you, oh assassin's creed. I like the way that despite ladders being "A socially acceptable way of scaling walls" according to your help screen, every time i use one i hear cries of "god help him, he has gone mad!" from onlookers. I would love to live in a world where people who use ladders are considered to be mad and you helped me experience that. I also love the way that when "Hiding" on a bench just after slaying 6 guards in cold blood, the pursuing guards stop right next to me, look around and exclaim "We lost him.. don't worry, its not our fault". I also thank you for not penalising me, post completion for killing drunk and insane townsfolk. They really annoyed me so i am glad i can put them down without consequence after completion.
In closing Assassin's Creed, we nearly fell out. I nearly struck your sequels from my list. But you saved it in the closing minutes, and for that, i am grateful.
till next time Assassin's Creed.
*puts disk away and smiles*
now.... how does this Ps3 thing work?.... *blows off dust*

and the second.. has fallen to my blade...
BAM!
Assassins creed finished!
Had a lot of fun with it but i have to admit that when people say "it is a bit of a grind", they are right. I have quite high tolerance for collecting and repeating gameplay so i got through it with only minor irritations but yes, avoid if you like variety and shorter games :)
now for a teeeny weeeeny bit of a rant.
WHEN GAME MECHANICS COLLIDE!
i am all for open world games and side quests and trying to accomplish them under pressure and time limits BUT... when one interferes with the other, you have broken some of your game.
Case and point -
I am running against the clock to assasinate 4 targets for my buddy assassin. One of my targets patrols and area so i follow him. I get up close and i am just about to sass him up good when.... One of the 60 Templars activates as i am in range. Templars just see you and instantly know who you are. The assassin mission then failed as i was "Discovered" and then i had to fight the Templar and about 15 guards... which left dead bodies everywhere so that when i restarted the assassin quest... there were 15 more guards looking at 15 dead bodies shouting "WHO IS THE ONE RESPONSIBLE?!" and then instantly attacking me, revealing me in the process if i am not holding my hands together... the only solution is to either run far far away and let the area respawn itself or quit the level and load again. If the Templars only activated when there was no active side quest.. this would have been a much better situation for me to deal with.
I get frustrated when i fail a mission and i do not think it is my fault. In GTA, I ALWAYS complete the tasks i am set, get out of the area no problem, and then just have to get back to base unhindered.. Guaranteed when i am in this situation, i get driven into by a cop car, which raises my wanted level and then all of a sudden i am on the run and then pretty soon, 4 starred and dead in a river.
I had a similar situation with AC. When heading back from a successful assassination, all of a sudden i am pushed over by either a Drunk man or a Crazy guy, into a guard. If there was some way you could react to this or keep your cover, i wouldnt mind. As it happens, there isnt and should one of these guys get in your way or wander up to you from off camera, you are discovered and bam goes your successful extraction method. i get that they are there to make it harder and more atmospheric, i just think they could have been implemented better. END RANT
I enjoyed the last boss very much though. Great fun figuring it out and even better was the post boss sequence. No spoilers but i liked the ending and enjoyed working things out after the credits.
now... for SOME reason.. the game gave me achievements for seeing 85% of the glitches and killing every target with a full bar... (which i am pretty sure i didnt do).. now that means i only need to collect "A few" flags a kill "a couple" of Templars to get 1000G... Damn the completionist in me!... there goes my evening
MGS4 next! might be able to start that on Wednesday

Sassin' up fools like its 1191
Hello there!
Well, what a couple of days. I have done lots of gaming, collected a few last achievements here and there and made a ton of progress with AC.
Really enjoying AC. I think the most satisfying thing is sneaking up behind guards and silent killing them with the short blade. I think the bass swoop and change of angle really make the moment. of course, i may be ruining the atmosphere a little... I watched a Louis Theroux documentary at lunch today where he visits a Miami "Super Jail" and all the inmates were using gangland terms like "Strap up" (fight), "in the paint" (place where they fight) and my personal favourite GABOS! (Game Aint Based On Sympathy=an excuse to beat up and maim weaker prisoners). I am blaming that for my sudden outcry of "SASSED YO!" when i killed a guard.... and every guard since.
I can see why people find AC repetitious though.. If i wasn't such a completionist then i probably would not have such an urge to push through all the cities to get the DNA bar filled. I realise i am doing the same thing again and again but i am noticing the subtle changes in difficulty and the combat. I appreciate it.
In my achievement hunting this morning i got the last few Portal 2 achievements. Enjoyed getting those as there were some nice hidden locations and story reveals that i will not spoil here.
I reckon i am about... half way through assassins creed now?.. i hope to complete it by the end of the week leaving the weekend and next week for MGS4!

R and R...and AC... FTW
Well its finally here!
2 weeks of time off and videogames :)
I have got stuck into Assassins Creed and i am really enjoying it. A lot of people told me that it is repetitive and can get boring but i am a sucker for collection stuff and open world games. i am pretty sure i want to collect all 500 flags and all the lookouts.. just because i like completion stuff. looking at the achievements... i may even 1000G this one. I got close with Hitman, but the achievements didn't stack so would require 2 more playthroughs and i am not willing to commit that time.
So assassins creed here we go! about 2 hours in now, and having lots of fun.

1 down!
I did it!
game one is off my list! :)
I have just finished and cleaned up a few achievements on Hitman.
My rating?...
7 out of 10
but hear me out. If it was the same game made today with the same resources i think it would be a 9-10.
its a great game and i really enjoyed it, but it just doesn't hold up to todays games. it hasn't dated well from a gameplay point of view and many things like load times, the HORRIBLE wait for the slo motion death to finish before you can restart and the strange limiting save system make it feel really irritating. fix those things, update the graphics and the context sensitive... sensitivity... (I hate opening a cupboard door when i am meant to be snapping someones neck) and you got yourself a good quality game.
In short, Fun but dating a bit now.
On to Assassins Creed! or... maybe i should mop up the last few hitman achievements?... it wont take me long to get to 1K... hmmmm....

Forced into it...
At a meal out yesterday evening, my fiancée and one of my best friends started discussing portal 2. I was then told i had to play it and was forced into sitting and playing the first hour or so so i could get to the bits they wanted to talk about. So I didn't play hitman at all this weekend what with the CTF tournament and then seeing friends. BUT... i intend to this week. You will see! I also get my evenings back soon and some time off. I am going to cut through this list like nobody's business!... wait. what does that even mean?...
*searches*

hitman continued
presently i am working a lot, editing videos for the HALO CTF tournament i host every year on my birthday and celebrating my birthday. add to that my father, mother and fiance's birthday all within 2 weeks and any other odd jobs i have said yes to and that leaves me with very little time right now :)
BUT
i have been playing hitman!
thoughts...
I did a mission without killing any one.. fulfilled all the requirements of silent assasin... and it did not give me the rating... bug? am i missing a factor? did i do something wrong?
i am torn between doing this mission again the same way to see if i can get it perfect.. and continuing on.
Right now i have chosen the latter and am currently at a pornographers party with lots of ladies and i am after a guy called Chad Bingham...
the game is good fun, but i am a little miffed at the occasional "Context sensitive conflict" in that.. i am about to get someone dead... and because i am an inch to the left, i will instead open a cupboard or make a phone call :(
Splinter Cell Double agent also had this issue. luckily.. its not having that much of a detrimental effect on the game so i am continuing on. I think i will be finished soon.
Agent 47 out...

so many great games...
Portal 2 came out this week.
It looks amazing and i really want to play it. But this has just enforced how much i want to complete this list.
Recently i have been doing a lot of Halo 3 for the CTF tournament and working all hours has meant that my videogame time is a little limited. this weekend i am working 2 out of the 4 days that "Normal" people have off.
I plan to at least get SOME game time in.
My aim is to finish hitman before Tuesday.
there. Goal set!

perfection
I am a completest.
I love getting 100% on things. 1000G in a 360 game... all the golds in a racing game. and in Hitman i have reached that level of understanding with the game that means i am not happy until i have got "Silent assassin" on every level on Pro.
Now this means i am spending a little longer than i should on the game, but i am really enjoying it.
I haven't played it as much as i would have liked as i have been "in training" for the CTF tournament in May. Very busy with work too so my time is limited at the moment. Still, end of the BBL regular season this weekend so i may get some of my weekends back :)
Stay videogamey people...

A Pleasant Surprise
I have to say that getting "silent assassin" ratings on Hit Man is a very very satisfying thing. I really like the way you can wait around to see how everything is playing out and then decide what course of action to take.
The newspaper bits at the end of the mission are also a very nice touch. am enjoying it greatly.
Last thing i did was to kill a guy lifting weights and made it look like an accident, blew up a guy with his own gas cannister, crushed a guy with a chandelier and then rescued an agent from the place by faking his death and reviving him "spy game" style :)
very much enjoying the game

Silent Assassin
I do quite like attaining "the best score" in videogames. Yesterday i saw it was possible to get a "silent assassin" rating on each mission. Now i realise most players would go through the story and then replay levels to get their rating, or not even go back, but... I couldn’t help myself. So after a few attempts at the Opera House i decided i was proficient enough to get in and out without anyone seeing me.
I returned to the wine farm and revisited the Delgado family.
After a few goes, I managed to perform a silent kill and an "accident kill". No one saw me. No evidence left.
I got my Silent Assassin rating :)
This game does have a lot of charm and appeal for the perfectionist gamer.

A pretty good start
Now I love all my consoles. They are great. but occasionally they misbehave and act like spoilt little childeren. Like if you want to change the video output on a PS3... you have to set it manually.. it wont just detect it.
OR like last night.. a game doesnt support PAL-50.
unbelievably... to turn off PAL-50 you must do the following...
unplug your HDMI
plug in the component lead
set it to TV not HDTV
go to the dashboard and settings
switch it to PAL-60
turn off the console
switch the cable to HDTV
Go to the dashboard and settings
set it back to 1080p
When it says "Does this display correctly in 50hz?" you say NO!
then you can shut down your machine...
plug back in the HDMI
and start your game...
So after a few setbacks with the setup i got stuck in with Hitman.
It's been quite a reminder of how far games have come in the last few years. What is now considered acceptable gameplay compared to back then has changed greatly. For example, the "Wire Kills" feel very wrong. There is no satisfaction in it. You Hold the triggers to creep up on your target... and then you let go... and THEN he kills them. but only if you are in the exact right place. if you are not he just stands up. Things like the save system and tutorials feel really dated. but you know what? there is a good game in all this and I am enjoying it. Atmosphere is great, story is pretty cool. If i had played this "back in the day" I would have thought it was amazing. I am about 3 missions in. Going to play some more now.

I will begin with my plan...
Hello World.
I Love videogames. I play lots of videogames. I also design them for a living. My partner loves videogames. My friends love videogames. Generally, videogames are my life. For the past few years i have had so many games to play for work, fun and with friends that some have slipped off my radar and i have missed some classics.
I have decided to play my list of "lost games" and in release date order.
I created the following list out of games i own, haven’t played, want to play more or have been recommended. Some games i have played the first hour, some for 10 mins, others never.
What follows is my list, arranged by release date and in the order i will play them. I intend to Play these games, report on them here and keep a diary of my playtime. I admit there will be times i play games that are NOT on the list, but i will also record that here too. I will NOT play another game on the list until i have completed the game before it.
Ladies and gentlemen... THE LIST
Tonight i shall begin my Journey with HITMAN BLOOD MONEY on Xbox 360.
I will report back with my progress and thoughts.
