Dear Esther…

Well.. This game has caused quite a lot of controversy since its “official” re-release. Is it a game? Is it even a story? Is it a pretentious money grabbing mod? You could argue in favour of most of those but you would find equal opposition on every forum that exists. I took the following approach.
It’s a kinda new experience. I want to see what it is like. I am going to be open minded. Let’s see how it goes.

And to be honest. I had a lot of fun. Yes it is slow and atmospheric. No there is no interaction in the game aside from moving through the world and observing. When I first played it, like many others I have spoken to, I couldn’t shake the feeling of “I am missing something”. It was an action button. No jump, shoot, talk, interact. Nothing. So I ended up starting the game with an unsure attitude and felt like I wasn’t quite there. This soon subsided as I began to listen to the story and piece together my version of what was happening. I played the game through in 2 sessions of about an hour and a half each. You can’t die in it, but when you do something like falling from a cliff or drowning, a voice says “come back” and you return to a sensible place near bye.

Now I don’t want to call them levels and I am not sure they are chapters so I will have to phrase this carefully. The way the world is constructed is quite interesting as it is a very linear game, but with little exploration loops as you move through the island. For example, a path will split into two, if you take the left path it will loop back onto the right path. If you take the right, you miss the left part altogether. Also there are frequent places where you head into a dead end, turn around and then see a hidden path leading away.

I enjoyed the experience, thought it had a ton of atmosphere and I enjoyed the ending. I recommend buying it, taking 3 hours aside and putting on headphones in a dark room and playing it. It left a lasting impression with me and I am glad I played through it.

One thing it did allow me to do though as a happy side effect was let my mum experience what it is like to play and experience a modern videogame. My mum is keen on learning what I do for a living and just finding out new things in general so often I show her new games and what they are like. All too often however it goes like this.
“walk over there.. no wait.. oh.. ok that guy shot you.. ok stay down.. that’s the B button.. the red one… no wait, let me show you…” etc.
With Dear Esther I let my mum play it for about an hour and she really enjoyed it. She was able to explore and move around with no threat and just let the story happen.

Is it a game? No not really. It feels like an art demo with a story in it. It’s like walking through an audio book.
Is it interesting and worth playing?. Hells yes.

No score – it’s just good. :)

Alan Wake and other things...

Hello there everyone, it’s been a couple of months.
I haven’t been updating due to being very busy but i have been managing to fit in some games. Not as many as i would like but enough to keep me ticking over. Recently i have been playing AVP, Alan Wake, Dear Esther and battling a Minecraft addiction. I think it would probably be a good idea to split those games up into different posts so here this one will be focussed on Alan Wake.

In short, I liked it. It grew on me a lot as i played through it. I liked the torch mechanic, it reminded me a lot of the recent ghostbusters game. If you havent played it yet (you should), the enemies are protected by darkness and you have to "burn" the darkness off with a torch or flare or other light source. It works nicely and has a satisfying feel to it.

Great atmosphere in the game and a lot of cool big wow moments. I think the only thing i didn’t like was Alan Wake. The Character himself i mean. he was moody and arrogant and just.. well... not very nice and kinda stuck in the middle of the situation. I tend to prefer games where the "hero" is a blank page you can fill in with your own character and project your ideas into who they are; Halo, Half Life, Dead Space etc..

For a game about a writer and the story... i couldn’t quite tell you what the story was. I mean, i feel closure at completing it and i know how it ended.. but i cant explain "what happened" really.

One frustration i have with a lot of games is the way collectibles are implemented. Saying "oh, there are 100 coffee thermos to collect" is fine...
however... not providing ANY specific regional information like "3 out of 10 on level 2" is the most frustrating thing ever. Mario World told you where you were missing things and that was in 1990. Are we seriously saying that 20 years on developers haven’t realised this? No. I think its just lazy. Plenty of good games do it and saying "its more of a challenge" is not a good reason. Here is a needle, umma chuck it in that field over there! there are also 99 more needles in 20 other fields. although i am not telling you which fields and how many. Have fun! Oh and its not just thermos flasks you have to collect, oh no! there are Manuscripts (91), TV shows (12), Radio shows (11) Signs (25), Supply Chests (30), Nightmare manuscripts(15) and Can pyramids(12) This makes a total of 298 objects to find. To put this many items in without a way of tracking them is lunacy. to highlight my frustration a little further, I found 99 out of 100 thermos flasks. If i want to find the last one, i will need to play the whole game through again and check every location. grrrr.

To sum it up, it's a good game and i enjoyed it a lot. I will play "the signal" which is a DLC expansion as my buddy Catherine keeps telling me the DLC packs are great.

7/10 (it would have been 8 if there was a collectible tracker)

Gears of War 1.6

of course, i am being flippant of Gears 3 with that title... I guess, when Gears 2 came out, i expected more.. but i got gears 1.5... so when Gears 3 came along, i at least expected a bigger jump... but ultimately, it was another slight improvement.. but the same game really. I am not sure what i am expecting or if i am being an over demanding gamer, but gears sequels havent wowed me as much as the first game did. Gears of war blew me away and changed my perspective on third person shooters. it defined many games after its release and has been a huge success.

but in my world, i wanted a little more from each of the sequels and have been a bit disappointed by them.

Now that is not to say that Gears 3 is a bad game. It is a solid title with definitely the best graphics and visuals so far, it just missed the mark for me. Possibly because of timimg.. I started playing it directly after space marine and it was quite a jolt to go from one to the other. Both games are about big chunky marines delivery millions of heavy duty rounds into waves of enemies... but Space Marine felt very epic, serious and, i guess more grounded than gears. To go from a game where the dialogue is meaningful and has serious deep undertones to Gears of War 3 and "wooo yeah! F**k! Boom! Nice!".. it lost a little something to me.

I don't know what i was expecting but i did enjoy it overall. Stupid hard end of game boss (getting frustrated with those now), some incredibly cheesy moments that broke the fiction for me (if you have played up to the stadium, you will know what i am talking about. If you haven't yet, you will know it when you get there), but some solid gameplay and a few really nice levels saved it.

the submarine pen was the best set of levels i thought.

Probably an Act too long and the final cutscene was... an interesting end to the trilogy but hey. At the end of the day, its dumb fun, blowing stuff up and if you don't want anything too serious, then go for it.

6/10 from me but most people i think would give it 8to 9 out of 10. Wrong timing for me and strange expectations :)

Time to finish Alan Wake and Halo Anniversary!

Space Marine!

I recently completed Space Marine. And I have to say, I was impressed. Not by the gameplay so much which was competent but nothing new or amazing but by the atmosphere and scale of the world they portray. Those of you who know me will realise that I have a weak spot for epic space battles, future war and gritty visions of a dystopian future. Also, little plastic models that you collect and paint. My vision of this world was faithfully recreated with a ton of atmosphere, Depth and most surprisingly to me, Believability. The characters have weight, but seem to be agile in a believable way. The Scale of the world blew me away to the point where I would find myself looking up at tall buildings, war machines and off into the distance for minutes at a time. Hats off to Mark strong for the voice acting. In fact, most of the cast did a great job. Every line felt meaningful and heartfelt and I was swept up in the fiction very quickly. All in all, I could probably fault the game on repetition or the fairly shallow combat but actually, it was really good fun. If you love the universe it is enough to keep you going and turns out to be a very enjoyable game. 8/10

:)

Now where was I?....

...Ah yes! Videogames!
Well, it’s been a hectic few months and I have been neglecting this blog.. but for good reasons.
In the past few months I have…

Got Married
Been Made Redundant
Found a new job
Had a Honeymoon
Started a New Job
rediscovered Minecraft

Ok, so the last point is not as valid as the previous ones BUT, I have still been gaming as much as I can. You see my studio was closed down by the company that runs it and I was forced to look elsewhere for jobs. This meant a lot of research and time spent investigating the history and products of the places I was interested in. A colleague and friend of mine runs a website called Gamercast and she has been focussed on writing articles for it. This has inspired me to get back to my game blog and keep it up to date.

In short, since September I have been playing Space Marine (Finished, loved it) Batman Arkham Asylum (not finished) Viking: Battle for Asgard (completed 100%), Crysis2 (just started), Osmos, Gears 3, Halo Anniversary, Hydrophobia and Alan Wake. A viking friend of mine and I recently took on the challenge of RESI 5 Co-op… and we completed it! It was actually a lot more fun than I initially gave it credit for but probably the worst ending boss I have had to deal with in a good long while.

So that means I have managed to take 3 more off my list recently since finishing Deus Ex and from a Gamerscore point of view… I am nearly at 100,000! :D

I will now post separately the updates for the games I have finished… before going on to my current quest… Alan Wake!

More to follow!

Dues Ex Done!... also.. ITSP!!

Greetings all!

I completed Deus Ex! it was good. lots of small glitches and problems but overall enjoyable.

the story lost me towards the end as i slowly started to not care about the situation... there ended up being a few agendas and i really didn't mind which one i aligned myself to. Saw all 4 endings and am satisfied.

I went on to complete Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet last night. Great little game. lots of fun, smooth controls, lovely presentation. yes. I approve :)

Next up.. i think i might finish off bastion or maybe Alice... not sure yet...

watch this space!

Deus update....

Morning all.

Well I managed to fix my little situation with the weapons cache. Loading a certain save and then forcing a re-zone load twice seemed to do it. Since the. It hasn't done any more misbehaving...

But I have noticed something.

Save - down a guard - take pocket secretary - read - get combination - works
Down a guard - save - take pocket secretary - read - get combination - die then load - pocket secretary vanishes
Down a guard - take pocket secretary - save - read - get combination - die then load - combination lost, but pocket secretary still kept, no way to add combination, just remember it.

Strange that.

Still, am loving the game again, played a lot of it last night and I think am nearing the end. Interesting twists and stuff but two big observations

1. Press X to accept/press A to accept... Very inconsistent

2. Inventory system does not support a twisting storyline as you drop items to make room for what you think you will need, then things change and you have no way or re equipping except loading a 30 min old save.

Despite the moans, good stuff.
